⏱ The story in 30 seconds
- Northwest Europe: about 20.7 million tonnes across Belgium, France, Germany and the Netherlands, 25.4% below 2025 (NEPG). Germany alone is down almost a quarter.
- Belgium cut its potato area by 17.4% after the 2025 glut, with seed potato area down 19.2%.
- European processors expect a "very poor" 2026/27 yield, with most of the crop already contracted and little left for the open market.
- Egypt harvests its export crop from late winter into spring — the same February–April window Europe's trade sees as the crunch point, and a second origin worth qualifying now.
Where Egypt Fits
Nothing in this autumn's European news touches Egypt's own crop directly. Egypt grows potatoes in more than one season, and the crop it exports is lifted from late winter into spring — after Europe's harvest, in the months when European stores are being drawn down. The European trade sees February to April 2027 as the point when it becomes clear how much good-quality stock is really left. North Africa also has no strong direct link to El Niño (our El Niño crop report), so northern Europe's hot, dry summer is a separate story.
Two links do matter. Much of the seed for Egypt's main crop comes from northern Europe, and seed potato area is down in Belgium this year (−19.2%) — worth watching ahead of the next planting. And when European raw material is tight, potato buyers look harder at other origins. Egypt already ships fresh potatoes to Europe and Russia and is a growing exporter of frozen fries; for shelf-stable formats such as canned potatoes, a different harvest calendar is exactly what a second origin should bring.
Europe Planted Less, Then the Summer Turned Hot
Across Belgium, France, Germany and the Netherlands, the growers' group NEPG estimates 20.7 million tonnes, 25.4% below 2025 and 13.7% below the five-year average, from 13.7% less area and yields down 13.9%. Belgium's crop is down 35.3%, and France, Germany and the Netherlands are each down more than 20%.
Germany's agriculture ministry puts its own 2026 crop at about 10.4 million tonnes, against 13.9 million in 2025. A late start after February rain was followed by summer heat and drought. The estimate is still provisional, and Germany's potato trade association has cautioned against talking about shortages too early.
Belgium shows why area fell in the first place. The very large 2025 harvest left an oversupply, and growers planted less: Statbel's provisional figures put potato area at 88,904 hectares, down 17.4% after three years of growth, and down 21.6% in Flanders.
Further south, early-October storms put most of the Lasithi Plateau in Crete under water weeks before harvest. Local growers estimate they lost 80% or more of their potatoes, along with what they had already spent on seed, fertiliser and labour, and they are asking for compensation. Crete mainly supplies the Greek market, but it is a reminder of how much weather risk can sit in a single growing area.
Processors: Tight Supply, Tough Competition
Market sources told Expana that some late test liftings came in better than expected after a milder September, but they still call the 2026/27 yield "very poor". Growers will deliver contract volumes first, and with the big majority of the crop under contract, little will be left for the open market this season.
Quality is the second issue. NEPG reports smaller, shorter tubers than usual and a risk of early sprouting in store, and Rucip's Domenico Citterio warns that usable tonnes may fall further than harvested tonnes — especially in Belgium and France, where some growers may struggle to fill their contracts. Poland, outside this group, could cushion European supply after a 7.0-million-tonne crop in 2025, but its own processors are taking a growing share of it.
Exports of processed potato from the five largest EU shippers are strong in volume but weaker in value, as Indian and Chinese suppliers gain ground in Asia and the Middle East. US tariffs and higher energy costs linked to the Middle East conflict add to the pressure. Heat matters inside the factory too: when dry matter falls, more raw potatoes are needed for the same output — about 3% more for a 3% drop in specific gravity, according to PotatoPro.
What Potato Buyers Should Do Now
- Fresh and frozen buyers: confirm contracted volumes and quality specifications now — open-market volumes in Europe will stay limited all season.
- Canned potato buyers: European canneries draw on the same tight crop, so agree calibres and can formats for 2027 early, and ask for drained weight and firmness on every certificate of analysis.
- Plan by calendar, not only by country: an origin that harvests at a different time of year covers the months when stored European potatoes run low — February to April 2027 is the window to watch.
- Watch 2027 planting decisions: this year's area followed last year's glut down, and the next contract round will set it again.
